Oral Cancer – No Laughing Matter

Oral Cancer – No Laughing Matter

Hollar Dental Group, your health and safety is our number one priority. So while normally we like to keep things light - hearted and fun on the blog, today we'd like to talk about something that is neither, but is seriously important. In 2013, almost 42,000 Americans were diagnosed with oral or throat cancer. The 5-year survival rate for this condition? Around 64%. We don't like those odds. However, when cancer is detected and treated early, the health problems become much more manageable.

That's why it is so important to have regular exams for oral cancer from a dental professional. Regular dental check-ups help ensure that any problems are caught early and can be dealt with while they're still manageable. However, in addition to regular check-ups, you can be vigilant on your own. Be watchful for symptoms like these, and contact us if they don't disappear within two weeks:

  • Painful, tender, or numb lips or mouth
  • Lumps, thickened tissue, rough tissue, crust, or eroded areas
  • Difficulty speaking, chewing, swallowing, or moving the jaw or tongue
  • Changes in your bite or the way your teeth fit together
  • Sores or irritated areas
  • Red, white, or discolored areas
